mICROSOFT EQUIPS INDIVIDUALS WITH NEW TRAINING RESOURCES NEEDED FOR JOBS
Microsoft Corp. today announced a new initiative,
Elevate America, which will provide up to 2 million people over the next
three years with the technology training needed to succeed in the
21st-century economy. The initiative provides technology skills tools at
no cost and low cost.

Increasing numbers of seniors using the web
Golden haired Bella Larson, 81, fancied herself more of
an old-fashioned letter writer. She preferred putting pen to paper when
it came to writing her grandchildren or dashing off letters to local
publications. Then Larson's children surprised her with a computer, and
she knew it was time to master the machine.

Mayor Diaz and Superintendent Carvalho kicked off the
second class of Elevate Miami during a rally with 200 sixth grade
students at Jose de Diego Middle School. The goal for 2008-2009 is to
double the success of the previous year by having 1200 families earn
computers.

The City of Miami has been ranked the number three
digital city in the nation by the Center for Digital Government, topping
several cities in America including Tucson, Arizona and Houston, Texas.
The Digital Cities Survey also placed Miami at number one in the State
of Florida.

SIXTH-GRADERS EARN COMPUTERS THROUGH ELEVATE MIAMI
Like most kids his age, 12-year-old Miami student Andres
Castro likes to surf the Internet to research school assignments or
check up on the stats of his favorite baseball player, David Ortiz of
the Boston Red Sox. But without a personal computer at home, the
sixth-grader from Shenandoah Middle School had to take numerous trips to
the Downtown Miami Library or use his school's media lab.

A growing number of baby boomers are leaving the field or retiring, and not enough young people are enrolling in science and technology classes. When the number of people who lack computer skills are added to the mix, cities face a challenge remaining economically competitive.

Alliance for Digital Equality Releases Study Showing Correlation Between
Broadband Access and Economic, Health and Educational Benefits
The Alliance for Digital Equality, a non-profit
consumer advocacy group formed to increase minority access to broadband
internet, released a new study at the Miami launch of a position paper
by Dr. Jabari Simama, linking access to broadband internet to better
employment, health care and educational opportunities.

City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and Miami-Dade County
Public Schools (MDCPS) Superintendent Dr. Rudy Crew recognized today
more than 600 sixth-grade students that have completed the Elevate
Miami - Rites of Passage program during a ceremony at Virrick Park.
All students recognized at the ceremony earned a computer for their
homes.
